Question by Noah C: When Carlos Boozer left the Cavaliers, would he ever have been a restricted free agent?
The Cavaliers had an option for his third season worth 695,000. When they did not exercise that option (to potentially give him extra money), he became an unrestricted free agent and went off to Utah for 68 million dollars.
If the Cavs HAD exercised the 695,000 dollar option, would Boozer have been a restricted or unrestricted free agent after that third year with the Cavs?
I dont know if him being a second round pick had anything to do with it, but hopefully someone can explain with their NBA knowledge.

Sorry, don’t know the answer, I do know a team can sign their own free agents for any amount, but it’s pretty obvious that Cleveland’s front office was not a very good judge of talent. Imagine for a moment if you would. Boozer & Lebron on the same team.
